When Are Two Coxeter Orbifolds Diffeomorphic?

چکیده

One can define what it means for a compact manifold with corners to be a “contractible manifold with contractible faces.” Two combinatorially equivalent, contractible manifolds with contractible faces are diffeomorphic if and only if their 4-dimensional faces are diffeomorphic. It follows that two simple convex polytopes are combinatorially equivalent if and only if they are diffeomorphic as manifolds with corners. On the other hand, by a result of Akbulut, for each n ≥ 4, there are smooth, contractible n-manifolds with contractible faces which are combinatorially equivalent but not diffeomorphic. Applications are given to rigidity questions for reflection groups and smooth torus actions. AMS classification numbers. Primary: 57R18, 57R55, 20F55, 20F65 Secondary: 57S15, 57R91

Modular Symmetries of Threshold Corrections for Abelian Orbifolds with Discrete Wilson Lines

The modular symmetries of string loop threshold corrections for gauge coupling constants are studied in the presence of discrete Wilson lines for all examples of abelian orbifolds, where the point group is realised by the action of Coxeter elements or generalised Coxeter elements on the root lattices of the Lie groups.

Hyperbolic Orbifolds of Minimal Volume

We provide a survey of hyperbolic orbifolds of minimal volume, starting with the results of Siegel in two dimensions and with the contributions of Gehring, Martin and others in three dimensions. For higher dimensions, we summarise some of the most important results, due to Belolipetsky, Emery and Hild, by discussing related features such as hyperbolic Coxeter groups, arithmeticity and consequen...

Geometrization of 3-dimensional Coxeter orbifolds and Singer’s conjecture

Associated to any Coxeter system (W,S), there is a labeled simplicial complex L and a contractible CW-complex ΣL (the Davis complex) on which W acts properly and cocompactly. ΣL admits a cellulation under which the nerve of each vertex is L. It follows that if L is a triangulation of S, then ΣL is a contractible n-manifold. In this case, the orbit space, KL := ΣL/W , is a Coxeter orbifold. We p...

Peripheral separability and cusps of arithmetic hyperbolic orbifolds

For X = R , C , or H , it is well known that cusp cross-sections of finite volume X –hyperbolic (n + 1)–orbifolds are flat n–orbifolds or almost flat orbifolds modelled on the (2n + 1)–dimensional Heisenberg group N2n+1 or the (4n + 3)–dimensional quaternionic Heisenberg group N4n+3(H). We give a necessary and sufficient condition for such manifolds to be diffeomorphic to a cusp cross-section o...

All flat manifolds are cusps of hyperbolic orbifolds

We show that all closed flat n-manifolds are diffeomorphic to a cusp cross-section in a finite volume hyperbolic n + 1-orbifold.
